The 7 best sunsets in Formentera: A magical guide.

The 7 Best Sunset Spots in Formentera: A Complete Guide + An Exclusive Visit Formentera Experience

No trip to Formentera is complete without the ritual of watching the sun go down. When the sky turns shades of orange, pink, and violet over the turquoise Mediterranean, you truly understand why this island is called magical. Here is the definitive list of the best places to enjoy the sunset, from legendary lighthouses to the most authentic “chiringuitos” (beach bars).

We’ve also included a hidden gem as our final recommendation, offering you the chance to experience the island’s most stunning sunset: watching the sun sink into the horizon from the sea on board a private boat. Read the full article to make sure you don’t miss one of the island’s most unforgettable moments.

1. Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse: The Edge of the World

Sunset at Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse Formentera

This is, without a doubt, the island’s most iconic spot. The lunar landscape, the endless road, and the solitary lighthouse create an unforgettable cinematic atmosphere. It is one of the most popular sunset locations in Formentera. If you arrive early, you can take a 15-20 minute hike to the left of the lighthouse to find one of the island’s ancient defense towers—perfect for photos or simply enjoying the silence of the cliffs overlooking the sea.

  • The Plan: Arrive at least 45 minutes before sunset. Walk to the right of the lighthouse to find the famous Cova Foradada, a natural cave that opens directly onto the cliffside.
  • Important Note: Car access is restricted during the summer; you will need to park and walk for about 20-30 minutes. Bring water and wear comfortable shoes!
  • Tips: It gets quite crowded in June, July, and August. We suggest walking a few minutes further along the cliffs to find a more intimate spot. You’ll still enjoy the incredible colors but with more privacy than at the lighthouse itself.

2. Cala Saona: The Most Comfortable Sunset

Sunset at Cala Saona beach Formentera

This crystal-clear bay is flanked by deep red cliffs that glow in the evening light, creating a spectacular contrast with the blue sea. While many enjoy the view from the sand, you can take the path to the left of the beach toward the “chiringuito” and continue up toward the old fishermen’s huts near Punta Rasa. There, you’ll find secluded spots to watch the sun disappear directly into the sea without boats blocking your view.

It’s ideal if you’re traveling with family. You can watch the sun set over the horizon while yachts anchor in the bay. It is very easy to reach with your rental car or scooter. Just head toward Cap de Barbaria and turn right at the Hotel Cala Saona sign. It’s perhaps the most convenient option if you have small children, as they can play in the sand or even take a sunset dip. You’ll also find several restaurants and a beautiful beach bar right on the shore.

3. Beso Beach (Cavall d’en Borràs): Style and Atmosphere

If you’re looking for music, an exclusive vibe, and a cocktail in hand, this is your place. Located in the Ses Salines Nature Park, it’s the ultimate meeting point for the island’s social scene. It is the least “quiet” sunset spot due to the music and crowds at Beso Beach Restaurant, but the beach is stunning. You can always walk a few minutes in either direction to find a quieter patch of sand.

The famous bench with the “No hay verano sin beso” sign is a mandatory photo op. We highly recommend booking weeks in advance if you want a front-row table for dinner, as it is extremely popular and prices are on the higher side.

To get here, you can take a beautiful walk or bike ride from La Savina port along a coastal dirt track, or drive and park in the designated lot. We recommend leaving your vehicle in La Savina and enjoying the walk past the harbor’s fishing area and Sa Sequi for a more scenic experience.

4. Migjorn Beach: The Most Authentic Vibe

The legendary Pirata Bus, located on Migjorn Beach, is a piece of Formentera’s history. It captures the island’s original hippie essence. Although the name has officially changed, the location remains a landmark at Es Arenals beach. To reach this area, take the main road toward Es Caló and turn right at the Es Arenals exit.

The beauty of Migjorn is its vastness—you can always find a quiet corner among the rocks and sand dunes. While you won’t see the sun hit the water (it sets behind the Cap de Barbaria headland), the sky still glows with incredible intensity.

Every evening as the sun sets, “Con te partirò” plays over the speakers, creating a mystical moment. Don’t leave without trying their famous nachos and margaritas.

5. Can Marroig: Views of Es Vedrà

Even though Es Vedrà is located in Ibiza, you can see its iconic silhouette against the fiery sky from Can Marroig. This is a lesser-known perspective, much quieter and perfect for those escaping the crowds. It’s the most “wild” option on the island, requiring a drive down a dirt road followed by a 20-minute walk to the coast.

The landscape is breathtaking, featuring old sandstone quarries (marès) and pine forests. You are almost guaranteed to find a spot where you feel completely alone, as if you have the whole island to yourself.

To get there, head toward La Savina and take the turnoff for s’Estany des Peix. Follow the dirt road past Restaurant Salitre/Hotel Lago Dorado toward the Can Marroig Nature Reserve. Park in the small lot at the end and walk toward the sea. For us, this is one of the most magical and spiritual sunset experiences in Formentera.

6. Blue Bar: Legendary Sunsets

Sea views from Blue Bar Formentera terrace

Also located in Migjorn, this famous blue-painted venue is a classic. It was a hangout for rock stars in the 70s and continues to offer one of the best terraces for saying goodbye to the day with chill-out music.

From the main road to Es Caló, take the right turn toward Blue Bar. Follow the dirt track to the parking lot. If you don’t want to enter the restaurant, the surrounding beach and rocks offer the same spectacular view.

Like Beso Beach, it can get crowded, but it’s a great family-friendly option where you can enjoy live music and a sunset dinner right on the coast.

7. La Savina Port

Many people overlook the port, but the views from the promenade with sailboat masts in the foreground are beautiful. It’s the perfect place for a final dinner before catching your return ferry.

While it’s a more urban setting, watching the sunset from the La Savina lighthouse or a bench along the maritime walk is still a lovely experience, with the added convenience of being surrounded by shops and services.
