Beaches on the island of Espalmador
The island of Espalmador is located to the north of Formentera. It is a private island, and entry into its interior is not permitted. On its southern side lies S’Alga beach—one of the most beautiful and frequently visited (public) beaches in Formentera. The most convenient and fastest way to reach it is by boat; options include taking a scheduled ferry service departing from the port of La Savina or from Es Ministre beach in Illetas, or renting a small private vessel. Some people choose to reach Espalmador on foot, but this is strongly discouraged due to the dangerous currents that exist between the two islands.
S'Alga Beach
This paradisiacal and unspoiled beach is characterized by its kilometer-long dimension, composed of fine pinkish-white sand, an extensive dune system occupying its rear—stabilized by sabina trees—and crystal-clear water. One of its historical attractions is the sulfurous mud bath, which supposedly has beneficial effects for the skin, although due to the island's protection and privacy, access to it is prohibited.
Marine and underwater conditions advise anchoring a boat with the utmost precautions, as there are reefs, islets, sandbanks, and shallow depths, although a small boat is the perfect way to explore the island.
Access to S'Alga Beach can only be achieved by boat, whether privately owned or by renting a boat or guided excursion.
We recommend visiting Espalmador because it is an almost unique opportunity to access a totally deserted island since it does not have any type of service such as restaurants, kiosks, bars, sun loungers, or parasols, just an extensive beach where you can enjoy some of the cleanest waters on the island.
Sa Torreta Beach
This beautiful and deserted cove is located in the northern part of Espalmador Island. It is usually heavily visited by boat from the neighboring island of Ibiza, although many people also access it from Formentera by disembarking at S'Alga Beach and then walking about 8 km across the interior of Espalmador until reaching Sa Torreta.
