Practical tips for sailing in Formentera

Sailing through the island’s turquoise waters is an unmissable experience, but it requires some planning. To ensure your day at sea is perfect—whether you join an organized group or charter your own vessel—preparation is key. Always remember to book in advance during the summer months, use marine-safe sunscreen, and, most importantly, strictly follow anchoring regulations to protect our *Posidonia oceanica* seagrass meadows. Enjoy the Mediterranean in a safe, mindful, and sustainable way.

Protection of Posidonia Seagrass

Anchoring over Posidonia Oceanica meadows is strictly prohibited and heavily fined. If you are renting without a skipper, anchor exclusively on sand or use the authorized eco-buoys.

The Wind Dictates the Route

In Formentera, the weather dictates your heading. If an Easterly (Levante) wind blows, you should sail along the western coast (such as Cala Saona or Illetes), and vice versa, to ensure calm, wave-free waters.

Protected Areas and Buoyage

Espalmador and Illetes belong to the Ses Salines Natural Park. Landing on the beach with motorized watercraft outside of marked channels is prohibited. Always respect the 200m yellow swimmer demarcation line.

Onboard Essentials

Always bring biodegradable sunscreen (crucial to protect the marine ecosystem), sunglasses, a cap, and some warm clothing for sunset. If you are prone to seasickness, take Dramamine 30 minutes before setting sail.

Frequently asked questions about renting sailboats and catamarans

Can sailboats be rented without a skipper?
As a general rule, the vast majority of sailboats and catamarans in Formentera are rented exclusively with a skipper (included in the service). This is because they are larger vessels with complex maneuverability that require an expert local captain to ensure safe navigation and proper anchoring while complying with marine regulations.
Is it possible to sleep or stay overnight on board a sailboat?
Yes. Many of our sailboats and catamarans are equipped for multi-day charters (weekend or full-week rentals). They feature fully equipped double cabins, bathrooms, a kitchen, and a salon. Spending the night anchored under the stars in coves like Saona or Migjorn is an unforgettable experience.
What is the difference between sailing on a monohull versus a catamaran?
A monohull sailboat offers a more traditional, sporty sailing experience closer to the water. A catamaran, featuring two hulls, stands out for its exceptional stability (minimizing seasickness), spacious solarium decks, and a much larger, more comfortable interior layout, making it ideal for families or large groups.
Are fuel and moorings included?
It depends on the booked package. For day trips, fuel (and the skipper) is usually included or estimated into the rate. For multi-day charters or overnight stays, fuel costs, port fees (moorings outside the home port), and crew provisions are typically billed separately based on actual consumption.
Can we practice snorkeling or paddle surfing during the journey?
Of course! Almost all of our sailboats and catamarans carry basic snorkeling gear (masks and snorkels) and **paddle surf (SUP)** boards on board so you can paddle to the shore or explore the crystal-clear waters of the coves during anchoring stops.
What happens if the weather doesn't permit sailing?
Sailboats are equipped with auxiliary engines, so a slight lack of wind won't stop your trip (you'll motor instead). However, if adverse weather conditions (strong winds or storms) compromise safety, the trip will be postponed or cancelled, with an alternative date or a full refund offered.
