Formentera boat rental without license

Boat Rentals Without a License in Formentera

Due to a regulatory change in Royal Decree 1188/2025, the rental of motorboats without a nautical license is no longer permitted; it is now mandatory to hold at least a basic navigation license (known as a “titulín”) or to hire a professional skipper along with the boat.

Practical tips for sailing in Formentera

Protection of Posidonia Seagrass

Anchoring over Posidonia Oceanica meadows is strictly prohibited and heavily fined. If you are renting without a skipper, anchor exclusively on sand or use the authorized eco-buoys.

The Wind Dictates the Route

In Formentera, the weather dictates your heading. If an Easterly (Levante) wind blows, you should sail along the western coast (such as Cala Saona or Illetes), and vice versa, to ensure calm, wave-free waters.

Protected Areas and Buoyage

Espalmador and Illetes belong to the Ses Salines Natural Park. Landing on the beach with motorized watercraft outside of marked channels is prohibited. Always respect the 200m yellow swimmer demarcation line.

Onboard Essentials

Always bring biodegradable sunscreen (crucial to protect the marine ecosystem), sunglasses, a cap, and some warm clothing for sunset. If you are prone to seasickness, take Dramamine 30 minutes before setting sail.

Frequently asked questions about boat licenses and boat rentals

Can you rent a boat without a license in Formentera?
Due to regulatory changes under Royal Decree 1188/2025, the rental of motorized boats without a license is no longer available: it is now mandatory to hold at least a Navigation License (the "titulín") or rent the vessel along with a professional skipper.
What options do I have if I don't have a boating license?
If you do not have a license, you have two very simple alternatives to enjoy the sea: 1) Hire the boat with a professional skipper, who will take care of all the handling while you relax. 2) Obtain the Navigation License, a quick one-day course (with no official exam) that will qualify you to drive compatible motorboats. Unpowered watercraft (such as kayaks or paddle surf boards) remain exempt.
Is it difficult to steer a small motorboat with a basic license?
Not at all. Motorboats suitable for basic licenses are very stable, safe, and extremely easy to pilot. They feature an intuitive steering wheel, electric start, and simple controls. Furthermore, before setting sail, the nautical company's team will always provide a brief theoretical and practical introductory lesson.
How many people can board these boats?
The maximum capacity is certified by the manufacturer of each vessel and usually ranges between 4 and 5 people in the more compact models. It is mandatory to strictly respect this passenger limit for reasons of safety, maritime regulations, and engine performance.
Is fuel included in the rental price?
As a general rule, fuel is not included in the base rental rate. The boat is delivered with a full tank, and at the end of the day, the consumed liters are calculated so you can pay the corresponding amount at the port. Since these use low-power engines, fuel consumption is typically very economical.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our reservation?
Safety at sea is an absolute priority. If weather conditions (strong wind, warnings, or rough seas) advise against navigation, the rental company will cancel or postpone the trip. In these cases, an alternative date or a full refund of the paid amount will be offered.
