Towns of Formentera
Formentera has houses and homes scattered throughout the island, but we can recognize 6 main urban areas where practically all services, restaurants, shops, markets, activities meet.
Port of La Savina:
The port of La Savina would be the first urban center to take into account, since it is the only access that tourists have to the island, and therefore, it is of vital importance. If something characterizes La Savina, it is the continuous traffic of boats: boats that bring and take tourists and Formentera residents, small and large fishing boats, and in summer an incredible number of pleasure boats captained by people who decide to spend their summer holidays in the sea, touring the Mediterranean coasts. The evolution of tourism has also caused the same evolution in the port; What began as a mooring for a few fishing boats is today a port that provides shelter to a large number of boats, especially in the summer season. For the same reason, the urban center of La Savina has also grown: now a large number of bars, restaurants, and small shops surround the promenade, giving more life and color to the small port of Formentera.
San Francisco Javier:
Three kilometers from the port we find San Francesc Xavier, this would be the most important urban center, considered the capital of the island, since the Town Hall is located in its square. Right in front of it, is the town church, a church that in the 18th century was used as a fortress against the barbarians, and which over time has become a refuge for the town’s parishioners. The Town Hall Square is where the most important festivals and events are celebrated, which usually bring together residents and tourists alike, in a festive, quiet and, above all, welcoming atmosphere. San Francisco is the most visited town during the day due to its large number of shops and bars, and especially the promenade, where there are numerous hippie stalls, which attract tourists with a multitude of objects related to the island. All this makes this town the capital of the island and a must-visit site during the day.
San Fernando:
Continuing on the same road that leaves the port and after passing through Sant Francesc, the next town to visit is Sant Ferran, a must-see place to go to La Mola or Es Pujols, and which offers a wide variety of bars and restaurants to visitors. You can go to eat or simply have a drink and calmly observe the passing of the people who visit the town. In Sant Ferran is one of the most legendary and historic places on the island: La Fonda Pepe, which in the 60s already had its doors open to the public and since then has been visited by anyone who wants to enjoy the quiet and authentic hippie atmosphere of the island, since despite the years this is one of the few places that has barely changed over time.
El Pilar de la Mola:
Without leaving the main road, the next stop after San Ferran is La Mola, the furthest town, as it is located at the highest point of the island, about 15 kilometers from Sant Ferran. It can be said that this is one of the quietest towns, since due to the distance, it is not as frequented by tourists and there are few shops and restaurants. Its biggest attraction is the hippie market that opens twice a week and attracts crowds of people. Another attraction of this small town is the lighthouse, located on the cliffs, from which you can see wonderful sunsets and enjoy the solitude of the place.
Es Pujols:
You reach this town from the port exit or through Sant Ferran. Just entering this town you notice that the atmosphere is very different from the rest, especially at night. The wide variety of shops, restaurants, bars, pubs and nightclubs make this place a tourist’s paradise. Whether day or night, the flow of people in Es Pujols is continuous; During the day you can enjoy its beaches and all its shops. At night the festive atmosphere reigns, especially in the pubs and on the seafront, where the hippie market attracts people, and the festive atmosphere mixes with the aroma of the sea.
Es Caló:
Former port of fishermen and seafarers, currently the area of Es Caló has become one of the smallest but most charming and tranquil centers on the island of Formentera. We can find various services such as apartments, restaurants and shops a few meters from one of the most transparent and beautiful waters on the island and always with the majestic plateau of La Mola as the main view. Next to Es Caló are Ses Platgetes, an area of rocks and small sandy coves that are one of the most beautiful on the island.
